Mi-Gi-Zi: Ojibwe for Bald Eagle

Mi-Gi-Zi: Ojibwe for Bald Eagle Cass Lake, MN

Cass Lake, MN

We set our alarm for 5:00 a.m. so we could get up to see Seth and Maddie off. Seth said good-bye to Jared (who was sleeping outside in his hammock again), and then started saying good-bye to the ducks, the loons, the heron at the end of the dock, the lake, etc. It was very hard for him to say good-bye to Cass Lake this year. We all said our farewells and sent them on their way. They will be driving Tom's Prius back to Beth & Bill's where they'll pick up the Camry and go the rest of the way to Grand Rapids.

After a few more winks of sleep, breakfast and coffee, Tom, Jared & I headed out to fish. Since Jared had only gotten a 24-hour license, he needed to get in at least one more trip to make it worthwhile. After being out for about 2 1/2 hours, and catching only 8 fish, Jared questioned whether the trip WAS worthwhile. Oh well, we'll have to try to win Jared over to fishing next year.

By late afternoon we decided to take the whole family (the 5 of us who were left) and go for a bike ride on the Mi-Gi-Zi trail around Pike Bay. Jared was able to borrow Paul's bike, allowing all of us to go. A couple hours later we came to the end of the trail, tired, sweaty, and a bit dirty, but having a sense of accomplishment and enjoyment of a very beautiful bike ride. Although the lake and forest are peaceful now, it was sad to see the destruction left behind by the huge wind storm, which had closed the trail to the public during our vacation last year.

Our 14 mile bike ride had worked up our appetites, so we headed home for supper. Tom had filleted 6 of our 8 fish for me to add to our Jambalaya for supper. It was delicious! The evening was spent relaxing and Deb & I had a nice visit. Seth called around 11:00 p.m. He & Maddie had made it home safely, which was a relief to hear. The forecast for tomorrow is rain, so it looks like it might have to be a Walker day!
