Shifting Sands

Like sands that shift on the lakeshore, the loved ones that surround us at the lake always shift between weeks. We woke up a little after 7:00 so we could bid farewell to our family members. Beth and Bill and family took off a little before 8:00, and Leah and Phyllis left right around 8:00.

We did a little cleanup of the cabin and by 9:30, Tom, Jared, and I were on our way to Pike Bay to try our fishing luck once again. With 4 mph winds from the South and an overcast sky, the fish were biting a little better than our previous days. After about two hours of fishing, we had nine perch, including one 10-inch jumbo that Tom pulled in.

While we were out, Seth, Maddie and Ollie arrived at Birch Villa! We were excited to see them…especially our littlest family member. Ollie was very interested in the ducks swimming around the shore and docks, and repeated “Hi Ducks” over and over. He also quickly made friends with his distant cousins, Ben and Elle.

We enjoyed a leisurely afternoon in our quiet resort. Things are always extra quiet on Saturdays when several cabins are vacant and being cleaned for the next round of guests.

Jared, Chloe, and Mary were in charge of dinner tonight and tacos were on the menu. They did a great job and everyone enjoyed them. Ollie was skeptical about trying tomatoes, but after one slow, considering bite, he swallowed and said “More?”

Later in the evening, after Ollie went to bed and Seth and Maddie were busy playing D&D with their friends online, the rest of our gang went for a walk over to Cass Lake Lodge. We talked about the summer homes, RVs, and cabins we passed in the park. Tom and I shared our dream of someday owning a cabin on a lake. After a stop for ice cream at Sah-Kah-Tay, we went back to our cabin and several of us started checking out lake homes for sale in the surrounding area–something we tend to do every year as we dream of our “someday-cabin-up-north.”

I went to bed with visions–not of sugarplums, but–of log cabins dancing in my head. It was a fitful night of sleep.
